We vinden het een ongelooflijke eer dat Brett Florens het startschot lost van de Two Rivers Marathon 2018. Brett, Zuid-Afrikaan en goede vriend van team Hardlopen in Zuid-Afrika, heeft 23 Comrades en 9 Two Oceans finishes op zijn naam. En hij lost niet alleen het startschot maar is, conform Two Rivers traditie, ook zelf deelnemer. Oud Olympiër Greg van Hest en Axel Rittershaus uit Kaapstad gingen hem voor. Een prachtig rijtje!

‘They don’t call it “The world’s most beautiful marathon” for nothing. Running the Two Oceans is an incredible privilege and this year I will be running for my blue number – My 10th Two Oceans. My first one was in 1997 and I have been in awe of this race ever since. It is an incredibly scenic and festive route with fantastic support at enthusiasm just where you need it. Taking in all the splendor of the Western Cape on the tip of Southern Africa is almost a religious experience.

For those of you looking to complete your first ultra marathon, you couldn’t enter a better race. From the beautiful fishing villages to the wine farms and spectacular cliffs of Chapman’s peak, the views alone with take your mind off the hard work that is completing an ultra marathon.
He wasn’t taking “No” for an answer
Finishing my first Two Oceans for me was one of my fondest memories. I had had a difficult time coming up Constantia Neck, I was blistering badly and had underestimated the hills. The cut off then was 6 hrs and I was cutting it fine. With 8km to go I decided to give up and get into the support vehicle.
I took my shoes off and was just about to step into the bus when a fellow runner and stranger stopped me and asked me if I had given it my absolute all? I said that I was tired of running and just wanted to stop. He said that he would take me through and promised me that we would finish. He wasn’t taking “No” for an answer so I put my shoes back on and he literally pulled and pushed me for the last 8kms, finishing with 51 seconds to spare. A complete stranger!!
The spirit of the race is amazing, I wish humanity could be like that every day. See you on the road and never, never give up!!’
